How to Install a Commercial Door Lock Guard
A commercial door lock guard is a metal plate installed over a door’s latch to provide extra security. This guard is commonly used on doors subject to high traffic or forced entry, such as in schools, hospitals, and businesses. While most commercial door lock guards come with installation instructions, some basic knowledge of carpentry and metalworking will help install the guard properly.
1. Begin by measuring the door where the lock guard will be installed. Measure the door’s width at the strike plate’s location (the metal plate that the latch bolt extends into when the door is closed). Also, measure the distance from the top of the door to the center of the doorknob.
2. Next, use a drill to create pilot holes for the screws that will secure the lock guard to the door. Drill two holes in the top corners of the lock guard, and then use these holes as a template to drill corresponding holes in the door.
3. Once all pilot holes have been drilled, remove any burrs or sharp edges with a file or sandpaper. Then, position the lock guard over the latch bolt and insert screws into the pilot holes. Be sure to use screws that are long enough to penetrate through both the lock guard and strike plate.
4. Finally, tighten the screws until they are snug against both plates. Test the lock guard by opening and closing the door several times to ensure it is securely in place.
A commercial door lock guard can provide an extra level of security for high-traffic doors or doors that are vulnerable to forced entry. While most guards come with installation instructions, some basic knowledge of carpentry and metalworking will help install the guard properly. By following these four simple steps, you can easily install a lock guard on your own.
